Canada – Armed Gunman Resolution
Situation
On a snowy, windy day in 2013, the Royal Canadian Mounted Emergency Response Team (ERT) confronted an armed gunman in a vehicle.
Approximately 100 meters separated ERT officers from the gunman.
ERT officers attempted to communicate with the gunman by shouting, but to no avail and the armed suspect opened fire.
Problem
Suspect‑driven emergency deployments and SWAT operations can turn quickly into life‑threatening situations.
Traditional communication methods, including shout‑outs, bullhorns, and vehicle PA systems put officers in close proximity to armed suspects.

Solution
After the ERT fired nearly 50 rounds in a gun battle, they suspected the gunman was wounded.
However, since he had several high‑powered weapons and had been returning fire, getting closer was not an option.
