Vandenberg AFB, CA – Protest Communications
Situation
Protests are a regular occurrence at the gates of Vandenberg Air Force Base. To ensure the protesters’ protection and the security of base personnel and property, senior ranking officials of the Vandenberg Security Forces Squadron (VSFS) hold an annual event to read a proclamation outlining the rules for peaceful protest activity on the base.
Problem
For several years, VSFS officers used a bullhorn to amplify live readings of the proclamation.
Due to the limited broadcast range and poor voice intelligibility inherent in bullhorns, protesters complained they couldn’t hear or understand what was being read, resulting in confusion and miscommunication at many protest events.
Solution
After former VSFS Operations Superintendent, Dan Flint, discovered the base was equipped with two LRAD 100X systems, senior VSFS officials used the LRAD Controller/MP3 player to record, playback, and broadcast the proclamation.
Now, protesters hear and understand the rules for peaceful protest activities, alleviating uncertainty and misunderstandings at the annual event.
